Tech Industry Diversity
The tech industry diversity index is calculated by dividing the percentage of tech industry workers who identify as people of color or as Hispanic by the share of those groups in the overall population
A diversity index below 100 indicates that a state’s tech industry is less diverse than its population, while a value of 100 would mean the industry is fully representative. Only two states had a diversity index above 100.
North Carolina had a diversity index of 78.6 in 2024
This represents a decline from 80.4 in 2023—indicating that people of color are underrepresented in the tech industry. North Carolina ranked #21 for this metric.
